Alphabet Letters.

Making 26 letters out of paper, opened a lot of opportunities of experiment, I was faced with loads of different techniques to create something that was unique but still visual to its letter.  My first thought was 3D letters, I loved the idea of taking pictures of a 3D object that would cast a shadow, but as it did seem quite a good idea at the time, so did it to everyone else, I put a lot of thought into what I could do, and through lots of sketches and experimentation, I found that surfing the web was a great way to inspire ideas and motivate some of my forgotten ones, I came across lots of different experimentation, especially on Pinterest, where I found that cutting into books, to then open them appearing a word, seemed to be very popular, I loved the idea, but I personally felt that it was not economically efficient as I would have to use a lot of paper, especially seeing as I was creating 26 letters.

Looking back at some of my earlier sketches I find a lot of work with ideas that were not possible to complete in the given time frame, I had a week to complete the task, plus a busy personal week too.  I knew that I would come to obstructions, such as the fact that shadows could not be casted using natural light.  This limited some of my earlier ideas, but it helped me proceed to my final one.  I had to break down my ideas, look at what would work in the given time and look at what I would need in the time, finalising it between few, really helped me develop each idea, sketching each letter in the desired look helped visualise and come to a conclusion which design was best, the last two ideas were difficult to choose from, as I think I liked each of them equally.

One being curling paper with heat and sculpting them into a letter form, then taking pictures, focusing on shadow.   The second idea, was to pierce holes through the paper using pins and the use of a sewing machine, then by shining a light through the holes, a shadow was casted, which was then captured using a camera.

The second idea was chosen because I really liked the idea of tiny delicate holes casting a shadow, I was surprised that the holes created such a strong shadow, as they were so delicate and small.¬  In reflection to the design process, I am assured that the time spent on designing my final idea was worthwhile, as I really like the unique letters that I have created, however, I am disappointed with some letters as the dots almost give off a shaky appearance, this was due to not having the correct foot and equipment for the sewing machine, I thought this was something that could have been avoided during the design process, but I would of benefited with a embroidery hoop and the correct foot.
